Receiving an Italian Education and Witnessing History! Pre–Tour The week prior to the Car Guy Tour group arriving in Italy, my brother Mike and I, along with Frank Mandarano formed the CGT advance team—the Pre-Tour. The Pre–Tour is where Frank goes around and sees all the guys in Milan, Turin, and Modena and confirms times and schedules of the group’s arrival.

Things really got rolling when we picked up our Alfa Romeo 159 Turbo sport wagon press car courtesy of Alfa Romeo, and hit the Tangenziale. With three guys onboard, and all our luggage, that car pulled like a freight train and cruised effortlessly all the way up to 190KPH! Passing was no problem—from 2000 to 4500 RPM this thing was all torque.

First stop was at Zagato Design Studio for a meeting with Dott Ing. Sig Caserani and Paolo Di Taranto. Here, tucked away in a back room, we were shown a very exclusive car. Wow!

It was then off to Modena for visits to Lamborghini, Maserati and Maranello, with stops at Schedone and Pagani. There was even time for aperitifs in Piazza Grande at the Concerto Café with Fausto Lettieri of Tubi Style, and visits to Campana and Candini known for their work with Maserati Restoration. The visit to Modena would not have been complete without seeing Matteo Panini and their family’s famous Maserati collection. Of course sampling the superb Hombre Parmigiano Reggiano was a culinary treat.

The Italians had heard good things about this year’s Concorso Italiano and we were all happy to be able to meet in person. They all expressed an interest in returning to Monterey and collaborating with the event they had always welcomed so passionately into their hearts.
